CERTIFICATION ISO 50001: 100% GREEN ELECTRICITY AT ALL GERMAN PRODUCTION SITES
Electricity generation in Germany is responsible for most of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Federal Environment Agency. These emissions can be reduced with the help of green electricity. Green electricity describes the use of renewable energies to generate electricity. Through its use, for example, greenhouse gas emissions of more than 200 million tons of CO2 could be avoided in 2019.
The energy management of a company is checked with the ISO 50001 certification. The aim of an energy management system according to ISO 50001 is the continuous improvement of a company's energy-related performance. The standard describes the requirements for a company to introduce, operate and continuously optimize an energy management system. By successfully implementing this systematic approach, a company improves its energy-related performance, increases its energy efficiency and at the same time optimizes its energy use.
At Rotkäppchen-Mumm, we work at all manufacturing locations in Germany with an energy management system certified according to ISO 50001 and purchase 100% green electricity.
FROM ROAD TO RAIL
We are the first German sparkling wine producer to be continuously supplied by rail. The switch from truck transport on the road to goods transport by rail affects our two supply chains with the highest frequency: glass and base wine transport.
Since April 2021, the empty bottles have been delivered by train to Freyburg (Unstrut) from the glassworks of our supplier in Franconia. A gas-powered truck is currently being used for the last 15 kilometers from the Braunsbedra train station to the Rotkäppchen Sektkellerei in Freyburg, but we are already working on solutions here too. Deliveries to our other locations by rail are also currently being reviewed.
More than 80 percent of our base wines for sparkling wine production are transported by rail from Spain, Italy and France. For purchases from Italy, we were able to achieve an increase from 32 to 96 percent in 2021. In this way we have already been able to save a total of 16,000 tons of CO2.
SQNPI CERTIFICATION
The commitment of our colleagues from Ruggeri in Valdobbiadene (Italy) deserves special mention. In 2019, together with the winegrowers, they decided to join the international SQNPI program. (SQNPI = Sistema die Qualità Nazionale Produzione Integrate = Integrated National Production Quality System.) It stands for sustainable quality from the field to the wine – certified with the help of guidelines, for example in the area of chemical and phytosanitary treatments. The aim is to produce Prosecco that protects precious biodiversity. The seal has been used on the first Ruggeri products since 2021
REFORESTATION OF DOMESTIC MIXED FORESTS
In 2022, our subsidiary EGGERSSOHN entered into a cooperation with the "Green Forest Fund" for its Italian organic wine "Foresta Ombrosa" – a non-profit association that pursues the goal of reforesting ecologically sustainable mixed forests with various tree species native to Germany and thus the "primeval forests of tomorrow". From now on, 20 cents from every sold bottle of Foresta Ombrosa go to the Green Forest Fund.
CRADLE-TO-CRADLE CERTIFIED PRODUCT CATALOG
Every step counts: That's why our colleagues at EGGERSSOHN now print their catalog with Cradle-to-Cradle certification. What does that mean? It describes a material cycle without any useless and harmful waste. It is no longer just about recycling, but about environmentally safe and eco-efficient thinking and acting.
OPTIMIZATION OF EQUIPMENT AND PACKAGING
The constant improvement of our equipment and packaging with regard to the responsible use of resources is an important premise for us. As a company that produces sparkling wine, wine and spirits, the focus here is particularly on the bottles.
We have been using the lightest bottles available on the market for some time now. In addition, recycled glass is used in the production of the bottles. While the proportion of old glass shards in white glass is over 60% on average, it has already reached an average proportion of 90% in green glass.
In addition, we are working to reduce the use of plastic in the labeling of our bottles. With the Celebration Edition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of our Mumm brand, we used direct digital printing for the first time and thus completely dispensed with plastic in the labelling. This now serves as a template for further plastic reductions in the bottle label area.
IFS FOOD (ALL PRODUKTION SITES)
When it comes to the quality of our products, we leave nothing to chance. These are therefore regularly certified according to International Featured Standards Food (IFS Food). The IFS Food Standard is a standard recognized by the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) for the auditing of food manufacturers. The focus here is on food safety and the quality of processes and products. The standard applies to food processors as well as companies that pack unpackaged food. IFS Food is used where products are "processed" or where there is a risk of product contamination during initial packaging.
We also play it safe with our suppliers. Regular audits and detailed quality specifications are an important part of all supply contracts. Of course, the companies we work with meet internationally recognized quality standards such as ISO 9001, IFS and HACCP.
IFS BROKER (LOCATIONS BREMEN & WIEN)
The IFS Broker was created to ensure the safety and quality of products and to bridge the gap between manufacture and distribution. Trading partners expect from brokers, agents and importers that their product requirements are communicated to the manufacturers and producers, where they are understood and implemented. The standard reviews the parties involved to ensure that they have implemented appropriate controls within their operations so that their suppliers act in accordance with product safety and quality requirements. Brokers, agents and importers must also monitor their suppliers in this regard so that the products supplied comply with legal and contract-specific requirements.
IFS KOSHER (DISTILLERY AT THE NORDHAUSEN LOCATION)
Within the Jewish community, kosher means that the food has a specific degree of purity. Unlike fish, meat must also be ritually slaughtered. A kosher food must therefore not contain any non-kosher ingredients.
IF Q&S (QUALITY AND SAFETY) FOR FEED AND DISPERTISEMENT
The QS test mark stands for tested quality assurance for fresh food – from the farmer to the shop counter. Whether meat and sausage or fruit, vegetables and potatoes – foodstuffs with the QS certification mark have a precisely documented and controlled history. The path of a beef steak from the animal owner via the slaughterhouse and the butcher to the supermarket or, in the case of apples and tomatoes, from the producer via the wholesaler to the food retailer is clearly traceable.
